Purchase - 1983 FXDG or 1983 FXRS ??
Hey Guys - I would like to acquire my first shovelhead, and know of two for sale that I am considering. Both are priced fairly close at around $5,000 to $5,500 ... the FXRS being less.
Assuming the condition (good) and mileage (approximately 25K) of both being equal … which is the more desirable bike? I’m leaning towards the FXRS, as I prefer the frame and 5 speed. Your thoughts / comments please. Thx

$5,000 is the asking price for the FXRS, however, I suspect I can get it for a few $$$ less. Appears $4,500 to $5,000 is about right for that bike in good condition and running well ... yes?

I had my eyes out for Shovel FXRs for over 2 years...and spent some serious time last winter looking. Ended up snaggin' the FLHS in my sig last spring, but...from what I saw in the north east market price-wise...5K is dang good price for a Shovel FXR in good condition. The 5,000 to 5,500 range seemed more towards "Runs OK but could use some work" category. Saw them in good to great condition more in the 6k and even 7k range. Some exceptional ones even going over 8k.

It depends on why you want a shovelhead. The old 4-speed and solid mount frame is going to give you the better "shovelhead" experience. That's why I got my 79. But I loved my 82 FXR - the "S" version would be even better.
ps the "willly G" model would be higher priced because it's a special edition.

I bought a good running 83 FXR for $5k, here in Maine.
Classic shovel vs. "modern" shovel - that is the question.
I'll mention this, not sure about the older "classic" shovels, but you can take many many parts from an evo fxr and use them on a shovel fxr. You can even put an evo engine in a shovel fxr. If that has any value in your consideration.
Good luck!

Just never could get used to the "look" of the FXRs. I remember when they came out they weren't very popular (even though they provide the best HP to rear wheel and frame geometry of any Harley) and everyone called them JAP harleys. NOW, seems everyone wants one. I have see a few done up as kinda Pro Street that were sharp.
