Primary chain oiler

Primary chain oiler
I changed the clutch plates in the 74 today and noticed the primary chain really wasn't wet with oil although there was about a spoonful of oil in the bottom of the outer primary. I have a oiler screw on the oil pump that was turned all the way in. How far should it be turned out for it to put the correct amount of oil not the primary chain?

The screw on the oil pump is the for the rear chain. The primary is oiled from the tube at the top of the oil pump. You should have a thin rubber line running to the back of the primary. Take off the oval inspection cover and start the bike. You should see a stream of oil hitting the chain just in front of the adjuster. If not take the hose off the pump and blow air through it. The primary only stores a few ounces of oil before it is pulled back to the pump.
If the bike is new to you the previous owner may have sealed the primary and plugged the feed and return. In that case you should fill it with oil until it hits the bottom of the clutch basket. The problem with doing this (sealed primary) is that if the oil gets low it fries the chain and adjuster in only a few miles.
