Default Rear shock disassembly question

I'm getting the lowering extensions for my rear shocks, and I read up on the instructions, which specify an HD tool to take em apart. Has anyone taken them apart without without it? I'm hesitant to buy a tool that I will probably only use once. I have a few ideas on how to go about it, but I wanted to see if anyone has done it yet.

Ride them real hard over a speed bump and the retaining ring will fall out releasing the cup thus disassembling the spring retention for you. Drive home quickly after that. No, I am not kidding.
