Default rocker's steering head

i was detailing my bike tonight and when i was cleaning around the triple trees i noticed that crome cover was loose i unscrewed it and revealed the large nut maybe 1". well i tightened it 3 turns with my fingers..WOW.. just had my 1000 mile service about 1000 miles ago. tech said he had to tighten it.. anybody else have issues like this with their rocker. and if anyone knows the torque spec for this that would be great. thanks chris

You shouldn't be able to move that nut if it was installed properly. There is a keyed, soft metal washer underneath it that is supposed to be bent against a flat edge of the nut to prevent it from backing off. If the washer is missing you'll need to get one from H-D (it's not a hardware store item). The nut should be torqued to 70-80 ft-lbs.

If you've been riding with that steering head nut backed off 3 turns, you're one lucky little biker that you weren't hurt. You must be sleepin' at the foot of the cross...

yes both the chrome cover and nut was loose..
thanks for the torque spec.too. i did hear a little vibration going over bumps but thought nothing of it. gess iam lucky.
i got caught in about 3/4 mile in groved pavment on the highway the other day.there was no signs, motorcycle use caution, groved pavment, nothing. we all know the vibrations you get with that. maybe that had some influence. i also got peppered with stones and tar pitted up my forks, headlight, front of the exhaust,so much there was tar and stones IN my turn signals.when i got the bike home and looked it over i was foaming at the mouth.
i took my truck back down the same streach of road and had a video camera...see no signs.. called the contractor made a complant. the next day they called and asked for a estimate to make the repairs..$$$
