'99 and earlier Softails, question about tires...
What is the widest tire you can put in a stock '99 Fat Boy without making any other mod than replacing the wheel/tire???
When I purchased my bike back in '98 there was a thing called the "wide tire kit" offered by HD. I don't find it in the catalog these days...
Now, I'm on the market for a new set of wheels and for the rear, METZELER TIRES 140/70HB/18 OR 150/70VB/18 were suggested. Can you fit a 140 or 150 in the stock rear fender without the need of any additional mods???
Thanks in advance for any info on this,
Mimo.

Mimo, I have the HD wide tire kit on my '99 Softtail Custom....it is basically a 150/80/16 tire on stock width rim with a change to the later ('00-'05) 1 1/8 inch belt or 29 mm (as opposed to the 1 1/4 inch belt that came stock). I have been contemplating a wide tire kit and after putting a couple of straight edges on the tire, I find that the Dunlop K591 tire cross section width is actually 159 mm...so it looks pretty beefy..much better than a stock 130 tire. After measuring everything it almost doesn't seem worth going to a 180 aftermarket kit. I then thought about going a bit bigger via using new 20mm belt and pulley but things get real tight with left side of swingarm and fender/frame struts if rear it lowered at all. I thought the wide tire kit was still listed in the '08 HD catalog...but could be wrong. Hope this helps.

So, If I understand correctly... I case I want to mount a 150 in my stock '99 rear fender, all I have to do is replace the belt for an '00 or later stock one (narrower), is that correct brother? The vendor insists that if I increase the wheel diameter from 16" to 18" (which is what I'm doing) I won't even have to worry about that mod, they say that it will fit perfectly as is...

Can't say for sure if mod isn't required with 18" rim b/c my rim is still a stock 16". But from eyeballing, it looks as though the larger diameter rim and tire would help clear the rear brake which is very close to tire on right side with the stock rim/150 tire. Left side, there is very little clearance with my existing belt guard...some have had to remove it when going to larger wheel/tire for clearance b/c it runs just about full length of rim on left side. Sorry, I can't reply for certain.
