Question Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioner Plate Upgrade Kit

Looking at this kit. What are the pros/cons? Is this a must have upgrade, if so why?

Screamin' Eagle® Hydraulic Cam Chain Tensioner Plate Upgrade Kit
This kit updates the cam chain tensioner of your early-model Twin Cam 88® engine to the latest design, as featured on the Twin Cam 96 engine. The billet cam support plate has been designed to allow the installation of the late-model Twin Cam 96 hydraulic cam chain tensionser to early Twin Cam 88®-equipped models. These hydraulic cam chain tensioners will significantly outlast the spring loaded tensioners, and are an ideal addition to an engine modified for improved performance. In addition, '02-'06 models feature the late-model single row front cam chain and sprockets ('99 - '01 models use the existing front silent chain). utilize a Twin Cam 96 single row front roller chain and sprocket (included in kit). '99-'01 models use Original Equipment front silent chain and sprocket to retain the cam position sensor function. The kit includes the improved late-model Twin Cam 96 oil pump that increases flow by 8% and scavenging by 22% to enhance other performance upgrades.

It is a good upgrade and will eliminate the need to replace the spring loaded cam chain tensioners again. Nothing bad about it as far as I am concerned.

So, you've installed it. Or had it installed?

For the money spent your much better going with a gear drive conversion. Removes alot of parts that wears and makes your engine more reliable. The twin cam uses chain drive for EPA purposes only.

Definitely not a "must have upgrade".

The tensioners in 00-06 last from 20k-70k miles, depending on your luck. When they are replaced, the second set lasts much longer than the first set because the cam chains are smoother. The tensioners should be checked at about 30k miles. If you ride lots of miles a year - then the money for the SE Cam Plate "may be" worth it. A lot of people do not spend the extra on the upgrade as it is not necessary if you check and replace the tensioners per HD. For those of use budget minded, that extra $400 for the cam plate could be spent on lots of other goodies

Gear drives are cool but have their own quarks. You have to make sure your crank run out is very good. And, even if it is now, it may not be after you ride the bike for awhile then you will have to replace the gears and gear cams with something else...

I installed one of the Harley cam plates kits with hydraulic tensioners and the larger oil pump in a friends 06' RK. The chain is polished so there is very little wear. There is no noise, as with gear drives. Worth the cost $429 when you compare it to spring tensions at 70.00 each.

I wouldn't call it "must have" but it's a very good upgrade; especially if you're getting the annoying blow-by carryover problem and it's time to do the tensioners anyway.

But.....Why have the headaches of worrying about minute crank runout and gear whine issues when the Hydro units are good?

Lots of the new style Hydro units running around out there with essentially zero reported issues.

More guys running around with whining gear driven cams that have had issues comparitively.

Hydro's mean no vibration that can and will destroy your crank bearings, and no worry about potential runout destroying the oil pump and causing the motor to lock-

The new Hydro units are a major league improvement over the old design....No good reason to do gear driven cams anymore. Regardless of measured crank runout.

Run-out has became a big issue because guys are trying to run after market parts in an HD bike....That isn't HD's problem.

The downside to the new plate and hydro units in the 2000-2006 is certainly gonna be the limited choice of cams that will fit the old style Twinkie with the new plate.

Think Andrews makes a buncha grinds for them that I know of.......

I cant recall the specifics but I thought I read there were some limitations with this kit as compared to an aftermarket kit like the one Andrews has put on the market. Anyone have more info???
