Default removing petcock and in line filter question

Since I have water in my tank I am going to pull the petcock and drain the fuel and clean the screen. Is there any tips to taking it out and is there any gaskets or orings that need to be replaced or are they reusable?

I was also thinking of putting an inline fuel filter in since I had a lot of trash in my bowl. Does anyone have one on there bike?

Its a carbed 03 standard if that matters.

I'd suggest putting a new petcock on. You can eliminate all the stupid vacumm lines and crap by doing so. If not then just check the seals for marring before you re install. I put an inline on a few of my projects. Its cheap insurance. If you get a clear one you can keep an eye on it.

I searched and it seems replacing the vacuum petcock is common. I may check and see if the local bike shop has one. I know they have a fuel filter so I am least going to pull it and drain the tank and install the filter.
You can drain the tank by removing the nut on the petcock and let it run straight out of the tank right?
