fuel filter stuck
i pulled my tank to have it painted and the fuel filter will not come out of the tank. it will drop about an inch or so but then wont budge! is there a trick to getting it out or just pull till it comes out?
are you talking where the whole fuel pump assy attachs to the center of the metal tank. It will pop loose from there. If you have that loose and your saying you cant get the whole thing out you have to disconnect the line down to the peatcock and it can be a pain then you have to move and rotate the whole assembly as you pull up almost 180 degrees if i remember there is not much room its a bigger pain to get back in.
I hope you got yours fixed, because I have the same issue... if I pull it out, it may break apart inside tank...? or maybe try to put needle nose pliers and pinch it together (top of filter) while trying to pull it out?
I guess I could pop filter off and replace everything underneath... had a leaky petcock issue. I can't locate my Harley repair manual...
to see if they even address issue..... also wondering if they put the wrong screen on? I'm working on my Dyna Wide Glide 2001 Carb.

I have a 98. Same issue when I pulled my tank. The only way it would come out is by pulling it and destroying it and it took a lot of pulling. It didn't come out in pieces just one mangled mess. The new one went in fine though so they must swell with time.
KP877 - OK got it out "Thanks" Yes it took some pulling, I put nut back on as to not damage threads then pinched fuel filter a few times as high up on the fuel filter as I could (until touching the nut) and rotated pliers up 90 degrees. Yes I tore mine up too, to preserve filter better I could have gripped filter tight then with screw driver between nut and pliers pry down. No big deal petcock comes with new filter anyway.
Note:
tank opening is .652
fuel filter dia. is bottom .633, middle lower > .652 (is tore up now), middle upper.657, upper .642
Thanks again...
P.S. Dealer had bike for 1 1/2 year (for 2 winter storage s and repair) I called them up after I pick it up and drove home (3 weeks ago) and they did not know anything about it..... Someone said they put all stored bikes up with fuel valve off... maybe it was not leaking during new carb install 6 months ago or so...? (my old carb, some dealer/shop switched out my carburetor (from when I bought bike new) with one, that had one of the float's towers repaired with JB weld, witch eventually fell apart- (no start).

Make sure you read the manual for installation. You have to start the nut a certain number of threads or turns in so it fits tight . Make sure you get the filter on the right side of on and reserve too. It fits both ways!
