ive had to do this several times. crank the bike, when the pipes get hot it will re-melt the rubber. take a dripping wet rag and make very quick hard wipes
Thanks for the suggestions. For my particular problem the oven cleaner worked, but only after warming up the pipes for a minute or two. They look good as new, whew! Now, how do I train the wife?
First I remove as much of it as I can with a piece of wood or toothpick while the pipes are hot. Then I try goof off, paint thinner or some other solvent to get the rest off.
I posted in another thread about the same issues, my step-fathers "old school" way of removing rubber from exhaust is go for a long ride and heat your pipes up fairly well. Then while using a welding glove (thick leather glove) wipe it off with your gloved hand. Works like a charm and will not mark up any surface of pipes as you're using leather vs metal or a cleaner.

I had a little, not much on my 2 into 1 right at where my heal rests on the footboard....it cleaned off easy with an sos pad....I took the heat shield off an put strip of exhaust wrap where my heal would hit the exhaust, reinstalled the heat shield an problem solved.
