Default Noob question Iron 883

Hey all,

Just bought my first HD, a 2014 Iron 883. Bike is stock and I wanted to add a Left side Solo bag to begin with. I know Licks, La Rosa etc offer those.

My question is, to install this bag on the left side (primary side), will I need to first install some type of mounting structure/plate?

Or can I just simply attach this bag to my bike presuming it comes with straps or ties of some sort...

Welcome to the forum! I have the same bike and I went with the HD brand one because it comes with a bracket. At the time, Fall 2013, all the others need no brackets. However since the only strapped on, I was concerned about it sliding around or looking saggy. Keep in mind those were only my concerns and not experience. I chose the HD because it has a bracket and some stiff structure internally. I am happy with mine, although it is more difficult to get under the side cover. Which I rarely do anyhow.

I would also suggest the HD one, my opinion is it is a better quality and with the bracket it's less likely to sag and easier to install, the others just strapped on but that can be a pain to figure out. I had a la rosa years ago and the buckles rusted and it got some creases in it because it had no internal structure,. However it was flexible with allowed carrying some larger objects.

a solo bag does not hold much, like a couple bottles of water is it, you might want to consider a luggage rack & a tail bag..

We went with the LaRosa with a fuel canister. Seems to be holding up
just fine so far. Used heavy-duty zipties to attach it instead of the
leather straps. Here's an old pic.

hope this helps,

T.

Or you could use this bracket with most bags that mount with straps:

Its from Dead Creek Cycles, they're forum sponsors if it matters.

And they also have their own bag.

You have many choices and with this bracket, you can "hard-mount" almost any bag to your bike.

I have this bracket but I haven't installed it yet so I can't say how well it does its job.

But I've read that some people were happy with it so I got one.

I have the Rich Phillips bag. It's a good thick leather and has held it's shape very well. No need for a bracket.

Congrats on your new ride!

The Licks one I've seen has a rigid side that attaches to the swingarm.

The La Rosa ones I've looked at come with a bracket to prevent sagging.

You're welcome.

HD's bag attaches to the passenger peg mount. So if you ride with a passenger you'll have to do some grinding on one of the brackets (peg bracket or bag bracket).

You could try the Dead Creek Cycles bracket. I posted the link in one of the earlier posts.
