Default Fork alignment, with or without drill bit???

Well I've just got my front wheel fitted after new bearings and tyres and wanted to check how to adjust fork alignment?
I've seen posts and HD diagrams say after axle bolt is torqued up put a 7/16 drill bit in the hole in end of axle and pull the right side fork out till it nearly touches then torque up pinch bolt. However I can't find any info to say that's defo the way for a 2012 model?
The fork leg on mine does indeed move a tad so I went with the pull out till nearly touch drill bit option but just wanted to make sure that's ok for my year sportster. It literally only moves 1-2 MM.
Cheers

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...-please-2.html your answer is already there and multihdrdr added more notes below that post.

Oh yeah, sorry my head is spinning over this. Can see now not to do it after 2008 so will undo pinch bolt and let fork sit back a bit when home.
