Use liquid graphite. WD 40 will do in a pinch.

Any light machine oilorATFis fine. I use Rem Oil. WD-40 is the worst for lubing cables. It more of a solvent than a lube. It will clean your cables really welltaking off the old lube. It will then evaporate and leave your cables dry.

I use Motorex Joker 440 spray on my cables...Use a cable oiler attachment... Joker 440 goes on wet, then turns into a teflon like coating, it is SLICK.. I sprayed my car door hinges with it and now my doors will not stay open.. You can get it from Custom Chrome.. Canyonrun.com is a dealer... around $8.00 a can

Try Chain lube it works good and it lasts longer than graphite.

I use Dri-Slide also. Seems to work good, and flows very easily.
