Default Gear shifter peg fell off, road side repair

I'm always defending that it's a myth that stuff falls off Harley's, out on a run the weekend ad yes it happened, went to gear down after a long run with out gearing up or down, and nothing looked down "peg gone", luckly I found a hardware/gifts/toy-store shop open on a Sunday which is rare here.

So purchased a stubby star screwdriver wrapped the shank in PCV tape to protect the thread then figure of eight wrapped the thing on the shifter, works grand.
All this is ok only for the fact I was riding with 2 BMW riders and two Jap riders, so you can image the Craic, how you get Harley parts from a toy store gonna have to put up with this one for a long long time......

who says after market parts are expensive? Nice fix. I'm gonna check mine to make sure it is on there good and solid. It could happen to them too so they better not tease you too much.

Happened to me as I was getting on the freeway a couple months ago. Luckily on the forward controls the shifter lever angles away from the bike so I was able to move my foot over and move the shifter with the top of my foot. It worked, but started to hurt after a while. It really sucked because I was driving 80 miles to a meeting and also to show the bike to some friends at the meeting. The very first thing they noticed about it was the missing peg. And these guys ride a Goldwing and a BMW, so you can imagine their comments. Bought a new peg and had the same problems with it on the way home. Once I got home I put lock-tight on it and haven't had a problem since.
