I have a 99 Sportster. 11 k Miles on it. It recently will have a hard time staying running. It feels like when I idle it struggles for gas and dies. Sometimes it will start up but will die a block away. Most of the time I can not restart it until i let it sit for a few minutes. It died on the way home from work and once I was able to get it strarted again, I had to ride home with the choke out to keep the RPMs high so it wouldnt die. Once I got home and idled it down, instant shutdown. Feels to me like its just not getting gas...my mechanic rebuilt the carb, replaced air cleaner, plugs and wires, gascap, and petcock. I also ran sea foam through it a few times. He wants to do the ignition next but I just dont think thats the issue based on similar problems I've read about online. I'm at a loss. And I just found out from the previous owner he had to replace the Bank Angle Sensor twice...not sure if that could be the problem...any help I would GREATLY appreciate it.
It kind of sounds like a fuel issue to me. Did you make any recent changes to anything before this started happening? You might also want to think about letting a different mechanic take a look at it- replacing parts one after another can get pricey
Did you change anything prior to the poor running issue? Gas cap, gas tank, plug wires?
When it runs bad, is it missing on one cylinder, or does it pop and back fire through the carb or pipes?
You can always check your battery terminals for tight connections.
Check the positive cable on the starter end. I had one deteriorate and it would shut off the engine if it became disconnected. It was only resting on the starter so when I hit a bump the engine would quit.
Sounds like a fuel issue,if the carb was recently rebuilt(right)I myself would check the fuel shut off valve and the vacume line that activates the valve.
