Default new wheels

Why in the world do chrome wheels have to cost $1000+ each. I would pay that much for a set including tires but when a new set of rims and tires run close to $3000, something wrong. I suppose we are paying for the CNC machines they use or its just that HARLEY name I suppose...

The cost is in the billet aluminum and the cost of the machinery/infrastructure that makes it all possible. I dropped $1300 on a Renegade wheel for my Softail and it is a shock but I understand there is a huge difference between a stock wheel and billet.

I picked up a matching set of 9 spoke conestoga chrome wheels for my SG that came off a CVO at my local Indie for $300 each installed. Looks sweet and a whole lot cheaper.

Sometimes you can find a good deal used.

I found a set of Agitators, with rotors, and reasonably new rubber for $1500 on eBay.

price is what people will pay. It's 90% markup. You can find chrome rims for cars with just as much material for way cheaper.

Just look used.

I think much of the reason they are cheaper for cars is: volume. A lot more cars sold than bikes, they can cover their fixed costs easier.

As long as people will pay absurd prices, sellers will keep charging it.

Not me, I like the look of a 21" front wheel but the factory wheels will have to stay unless I run across a very very good deal on a set.

Simple...quantity produced and sold. It's the materials, the demand, and the multitude of styles and choices out there, and the equipment and time required for R&D, etc.

Of course motorcycle wheels are not produced at anywhere near the massive quantity of wheels produced for automobiles. So with autos, you get that volume discount for sure. Not so with bikes.

Motorcycle accessories are kin to accessories for airplanes and boats, everything is crazy expensive and it always has been that way. Luxury non-essentials.
