Why in the world do chrome wheels have to cost $1000+ each. I would pay that much for a set including tires but when a new set of rims and tires run close to $3000, something wrong. I suppose we are paying for the CNC machines they use or its just that HARLEY name I suppose...
The cost is in the billet aluminum and the cost of the machinery/infrastructure that makes it all possible. I dropped $1300 on a Renegade wheel for my Softail and it is a shock but I understand there is a huge difference between a stock wheel and billet.
I picked up a matching set of 9 spoke conestoga chrome wheels for my SG that came off a CVO at my local Indie for $300 each installed. Looks sweet and a whole lot cheaper.
Simple...quantity produced and sold. It's the materials, the demand, and the multitude of styles and choices out there, and the equipment and time required for R&D, etc.
Of course motorcycle wheels are not produced at anywhere near the massive quantity of wheels produced for automobiles. So with autos, you get that volume discount for sure. Not so with bikes.
