Default Help! - $3000 for a Road King with No Oil Pressure

Hey guys and gals,

I am new to the forum and I apologize for having my very first post as a "Need Help!!!-What's the value?" type post.

Anyway, I have a chance to buy a 2005 Harley Road King for $3000. Problem is, it has no oil pressure.

I have read a few posts here in the last few hours of how this could be caused by the notorious cam chain tensioner breaking apart into the oil-pump but then again, there are dozens of other reasons why a bike can loose pressure.

THe owner says he did not run the bike after realizing the problem and there were no weird sounds of such when he killed the motor.

Do you think this purchase would be a nightmare of a project? Should I pass or should I chance it and swoop this thing up?
at this price.

I will see the bike in just a few hours and am afraid that if I do not put down a deposit for it now, it will be gone within a couple of hours

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!
Jason

If you are mechanically inclined it might be a great deal. But it may require tearing down the engine (which if upgrades are wanted, now might be a good thing). But you might spend as much as finding a bike with no problems. If you need to take it to a shop to do it, I would steer away from it. Could offer less & see if you can get it cheaper. Good luck

that's a good deal if you can work on it yourself, if not you could be spending enough money you could have just bought one that didn't need anything. pull the dip stick and stick a long screw driver all the down to the bottom and see what you come up with. look for metal in the oil.

With those miles sounds like tensioners have failed, and without looking in the cam chest it would be hard to determine repair costs

How was no oil pressure verified? If the light on?

It could be 10 different things wrong but may not be serious or worst case it the crank slipped and cracked the oil pump gerotor.

If you dont want it, i'd glady but it if it were somewhat close to me.

Well, I bought the bike.

It has a few nicks and scratches here and there and a bit of surface rust in some areas and will need a new front tire shortly. But the motor seemed good enough despite the said problem. It started right up till I told the guy to kill it after a few seconds of running. I didn't notice any smoke or weird noises as it run either.

We will see how this all pans out as I will pick it up tomorrow.

I'm still not sure this is the bike that I want though. I went from looking for a little 305cc Honda to pretty much buying one of the biggest bikes on the street.

With that being said, stay tuned as there may be a cheap road king for sale in the classifieds

Btw, I gave a $300 down payment with a hand written contract.

3k for the bike and plan on a new motor which could go between as little as 1500 for a used ebay one up to 5k or more.

Understand you may get real lucky and have a cheap fix too.

3000.00 for bike 5000.00 for a new engine I don't know what a 120 CI crate engine cost I am guessing at 5000.00 so you are looking in the neighborhood of 8000 to10.000 bucks but I'm only guessing.

Could be as simple as a failed oil pressure sensor. No funny noises is a good sign, though. Get it home and open up the cam chest and see what you have.

If it truly has no oil pressure it only takes like 2 seconds to know. The lifters would be clacking like a diesel engine. Loud and instantly identifiable...

3K for the whole bike is a HUGE deal. Engines are cheapish and easy to come by. A home rebuild if necessary is not hard or super expensive either.
