Question Starter pinion gear question

I have a 2007 street glide that I am replacing the compensator on. With the primary cover off I can see the starter pinion gear. The front portion of the pinion gear looks a little worn. The ring gear looks great. My question is, can I replace the pinion gear from the primary side or will I have to pull the starter. It would be so easy to pop off the snap ring and replace the gear since I have the primary apart if that is even possible.

Its been a while since I had my starter or primary off but I would think you could, as long as the hub is out of the way, because the gear may not clear the gear if it were in the way. If this were the case you could probably just loosen the starter and pull it out a hair for clearance. The other thing I remember is how easy the 07 and up starters were just 2 bolts to remove without opening up the primary.
