I went to a local independant and they quoted me 3K, but that was for cams, a tuner, upgraded cam chest, dyno tune and labor.

Needless to say they won't be getting my business...
This is for an 05 TC88.

I know a tuner eats up 500. Cam chest upgrade, what...another few hundred.
I can't figure out a couple grand for a set of cams, labor and a dyno tune.
I must be missing something.

 

IF you have the time and inclination, get the tools and learn to do it yourself. There are many youtube videos that will help you. This one seems to be one of the best:

My local shop just quoted me $900 parts & labor to install cams in my '13 SG. About what I expected.
