Oil Change - (4) Quarts?
I want to change the oil in my '05 Ultra .... the specs listed in the owner's manual states that the oil capacity is (4) quarts, but the oil change instructions say to "initially add 3.5 quarts" then check the oil level using the cold check method - then start engine to check for leaks - then check the oil level using the hot check method.
As a rule, do you end up pouring in the additional 1/2 quart making it a total of (4) quarts per the specs in the manual?

Don't dought what the book is telling you. It's a simple process. Chenge the oil and filter, pour the new oil in, start the bike and check for leaks and then top it off. Don't read too deep into a simple process. Your not going to ruin your bike if it is a little low or a little high. Shoot for the middle of the dipstick and you will have no problems.
Good luck.

Mine takes 4, but I did the 3 1/2, then added the extra. Different bikes will be a little different. Once you do it once, you will know just how much to use.
My wife's Softail specifies 3 1/2, but it is full at 3, even with a filter change. If I put in more, it blows oil all over the right side from the breather.
The also applies to the primary and trans. The actual capacity may vary a little from the book, but as stated above, a few ozs. one way or the other is not going to be a deal breaker.
Regards,
Bill
