Default What wire gauge for extending wires?

Planning on installing apes on my 2012 RKC. What guage wire should I use for soldering in extensions for the wires? I'm thinking 16 gauge but is that too heavy?

I just put 12" apes on my Ultra and in my opinion a pre-fabed kit is the only way to go. Every wire was color-coded, had the proper connectors and included shrink tubing for every connection. They had instructions for the Molex connectors used by the factory too

+1. If you decide to go at it without, I would use 18AWG. If you run 16AWG, you might have a hard time pulling them all through the bars, specifically the openings at the end and in the middle by the risers/clamping knurls.

I did think I'd rather use the pre-fab kit but was concerned about the possibility of them pulling apart. How about some feedback on this topic. It is a lot easier and I probably suck at soldering. Anybody have any problems with the pre-fab kits? Thanks all for the feedback.

I personally would not use any wire smaller than the 1 I am extending (but that is just me) and using a larger wire than what you are extending does not gain you anything.

Just buy some wire, some shrink tubing, and solder them up. I have under $10 in my extensions. Here are some pictures.

And that's all that's to it. You may want to stagger the cuts but I had no problems pulling them through.
