You can't hear it in any other gear. I just bought this bike...Of course I did'nt notice it on the test ride...It has less than 7000 miles. Is this a big problem? PO says all maintence done by dealer.

 

Do not worry. It is normal. 5th has straight teeth whereas 1,2,3,4 and 6th are helical. Seriously it is normal.

 

Plus 1 on roadglidejoe. My 09 street glide is the same way.

Just use the search function & put in "5th gear whine". There are lots of threads on it. Perfectly normal.

Changing to a different oil can help eliminate that, some say.

 

Turn up the radio!

 

I have a buddy with an 07 with the same issue. He was told it is normal as well, he put new Amsoil heavier lubricant and pretty much got rid of it. Came remember the weight.

 

When I put pipes on the 5th gear whine went away.

 

Redline fluid definitely helped quiet up mine
