Harley wife trying to find a motor...need help...lots of help.
I'm new here, obviously, and very uneducated about Harley motors, well Harley's in general. I'm hoping this is the right place to post. My Harley husband has a 2003 Harley Davidson FLHRSEI2 Screamin' Eagle Road King anniversary edition with the 103 engine in it. (I really hope I got that right). It's the gold one with the brown designs. His motor went out something to do with the crank shaft or something. The mechanic said it needed a new engine. Seems theres a manufacturers defect and one in four of these engines has this problem. We can't do a new engine or a remanufactured one right now. My hubby's birthday is coming up and I have a tad bit socked away and would like to find an engine that we can put in it until I can get enough money to get the remanufactured one (which may take a while). Now for the really dumb questions: Can a different engine not a 103 something that is stock or not upgraded be put into the bike? A twin cam 88? Or 95? Or 96? ( See I am trying). My husband just wants to ride, he is getting a tad depressed about not being able too and I'm trying to help. He is not in love with this bike. He just got a good deal and really loves to ride. So keeping this bike true is not my main objective. Could someone please help a harley wife get her hard working harley husband back on the road?

Grand Rapids Harley in Grand Rapids Michigan has a new take out motor sitting in their service area. I believe it was taken out of a 2011 Street Glide when they swapped in a 120R engine for a customer.
I think the new take out motor had a price tag of around $2500. You might want to give them a call to discuss the motor. I don't remember if it is a 96" or a 103". They might be able to advise if it will fit your bike as well.
Your other option may be to search ebay. There are a TON of used take out engines on ebay.
Good luck.

If the main cases are not damaged, the flywheel assembly can be removed and either repaired or replaced with new parts. Harley, S&S & others have the needed parts available. If the flywheel assembly can be repaired, trued & balanced, then a company like Dark Horse can do the work needed. Your bike shop should know of these other options and should have suggested them to you.

I would have to assume, that being a 03', it would have the standard 5-speed tranny, that mates to the 88" motors. I thought the SE motor in that year was a 95" not a 103", but either way, the 95 would be a bored 88", and the 103" would be bored and stroked. Either way, my guess would be that youll have to go with an 88" motor, or an 88" thats been bored to 95". Any engine pre 2007 should bolt right up to the transmission on your husbands Road King.
So my advice would be to look for an 88" thats been removed from a bike pre-2007. 96" and 103" engines, (2007 and newer) wont bolt up to your husbands tranny, because they came in bikes equipped with HDs cruise drive 6-speed tranny.
Hopefully thats kinda clear, and will help you in which direction you need to head.

Come on chaps, help the lady out! She is asking for advice on buying a working engine to fit their bike, with a limited budget, not how to repair the damaged one! Keep the tecky stuff for another day.
A 2003 bike has a TC88 based engine, so a TC96 generation 103 will not bolt in, due to the different oil feed etc. A TC88 will be a straight bolt-in and they were made up to model year 2006. Am I right?!
If so Peggy, our damsel in distress, wants a TC88A (not a softail motor which is a TC88B).
