Default 9.5 hrs labor???

My '05 RK just turned 21K,,, thinking about having the tensioners replaced, new inner cam bearings, S&S adjustable push rods, S&S Lifters installed... No new Cams

My otherwise good indy wants to charge 9.5 hrs labor or $615.50 to do the work... Parts came to $498.00,,,, I'm still debating if I want to upgrade to new cams...

Seems a little high to me,,, What says you?

I'd look for a different indy, it shouldn't take that long, especially since you have true duals. I'd say 5 hrs tops & you might as well put in new cams, I'd recommend Andrews 21s or 26s.

"Time" is usually determined by a published industry standard.

in the auto world, it might be the Mitchell Guide.

so each job is alotted a "time"- and that time X the hourly rate equals the cost.

a tech who is good, experienced and fast makes more money, a slow tech does not.

you might ask the indy what he is basing his "time" rate on, an industry standard or his best guess how long in takes him ( maybe he is slow...)

in any case- the more you and the indy talk and see eye to eye, the happier you will be with the result of the job and the cost

I would suggest that 9.5 hours seems long- some shops add extra time if the rider has added extra weird pipes or stuff that needs to come off, or if it looks like the bike is poorly maintained with rounded off bolts etc. everywhere

Mike

1115.00 out the door? You have wheels fire them up go and get other
estimates, see who is cheapest, then figure out who you trust the most,
and go with them.

Yes $1115 out the door...

I've always done my own maintenance on my bike, ever since my first new '85 XLX... Rebuilt a few Small Block Chevy's over the years, so I am mechanically inclined.

The Indy gave me all the part numbers & prices,,, I checked and depending on the part, he is charging me $10 to $30 more on each item over what I can order the parts for myself.

I'm thinking the money I save doing this myself will more than pay for the cam bearing puller/installer tools and pay for new Andrews 21's.

That price is pretty close to what my Indy gave me for a Cam job with woods 555.
Mine quoted me about $1100.

5 hours is about right. I did mine in about that amount of time and had never done it before. 9.5 hours is some straight up raping and pillaging!

With Cams, I would agree $1100 wouldn't be bad.

Does your mechanic know you're using adjustable pushrods? He may have quoted you based on stock pushrods which require top end disassembly and extra time.

I have the tools for replacing the cam bearings and cams. If you would be willing to pay for the shipping I could send them to use. USPS is only about $11.00 each way.
