Default battery tender and new battery

I just installed a brand new Deka battery in my 05 ultra. It starts the bike right up. I then hooked my battery tender up to the battery and came back in a couple of hours. The red light was still on and the battery tender was extremely hot. Something wrong here. The battery reads 13.47 volts. I don't think the battery tender should be that hot. What have I done wrong? Yes I did unplug the tender.
Thanks in advance .
Tom

New batteries require several complete charges initially, that's why bikes that have been started stopped, started stopped repeatedly at a dealership by knucklehead salespeople get their battery service life shortened by over half. The first thing I do when I buy a new battery I give it a complete bench charge by a charger with a little more chitspa then a tender. Then I put it in the bike and fire it up....now you can plug it into the tender. The battery that came with my bike didn't even last two years....perfect example.

same method here.

my 09 battery is feeling puny ( 50 months), and Amazon has my new one on the way.

it'll go on the charger overnight before it goes in the bike.

Plan on 2 years, hope for 4

Simular situation had happened on my auto. The battery tender was on all night and still was not fully charged. The tender was hot so I unplugged it. A few months later I had to replace that battery, dead cell, but this battery was old so it was time anyway.

There is nothing wrong! A new battery may be said to be fully charged, but it isn't. Take the battery off your bike and charge it with a charger, not tender, over night. It should then be fully charged. Alternatively go for a long ride - a tankful should achieve the same results and is a bit more fun!

Did you hook it up directly to the battery, or did you use the pigtail that comes out by the side cover?

I had this same problem and discovered that the in-line fuse on the pigtail had blown. The light stayed red because I wasn't charging anything.
