Default Bigger Tire for 2002 Electra Glide Classic

I just purchased a 2002 Electra Glide Classic and love it (first Harley in25 years of licensed driving) but I'm not in love with the back tire. I'm accustom to a wider rear tire and this one has the stock MT90-16 which is a 130 if I used the Avon tire conversion chart correctly. I've seen a lot of posts and specs for 2002 Glides with 150s but I'm not sure what modifications where done or if most fit the stock rim size.

Has anyone ran a wider tire on the stock rim or am I looking at a pile of money in replacing the wheel, calibers and other parts to make things fit.

I contacted my local HD stealer, but haven't heard back.

I am a great fan of Avons and have Venoms both ends on my FLHS. I have used a 140/90 and have just fitted a 150/80, so it can be done! A 140/90 will fit straight on, although you may have to modify the belt guard to provide enough clearance where the belt passes the tyre. I had just 3/16" clearance with my original 1 1/2" wide belt, but couldn't squeeze in a 150 without going to a narrow 1 1/8" belt, which I now have. There is more clearance now than with the 140 fitted.

I wrote to Avon a couple of years ago about using Venoms and they recommended using their 140/90 if riding fully loaded because it has a higher load rating than the 130/90. They are MU and MT repectively. Their 150/80 is also MU rated, but its rolling diameter is closer to the original MT or 130/90. I initially thought I could get it in with my wide belt, but had to admit defeat!

With your 2002 bike your pulley may stand a little further off the hub than my 1990 model, so you may find you have more clearance already. The fitted width of a 130/90 Venom is supposed to be 133mm, on my wheel a 140/90 was actually 139mm wide and my nice new 150/80 is actually 153mm wide. All three tyres can be fitted to a stock 3" wide rim. To get a 150/80 in on your bike you need half the difference in overall tyre width, or at least 10mm or 3/8" between your current tyre and belt. If it looks tight, measure the actual width of your current tyre.

Best of luck!

My bike is a 2002 Electra Glide Classic with stock wheels.
I have a Dunlop D402 in size MU85B16

The tire is wider, has a deeper tread (2/32 more) and offers about 90 lbs more load capacity for the rear tire. Much longer life than stock size.

It has to be aligned perfectly to not touch the belt guard but works great.

In fact, today I received my new replacement tire to change for the season.
Same size.

Much better than the MT90B16.

I have a 2002 Heritage. Without replacing the drive belt a 140 or MU is as wide as you can go. The 140 will fit with not modification. You will be able to see a difference.

I have an 03 EG, I run a 150 on it, just had to put in a small spacer (can't remember size, maybe 1/4") between wheel and belt pulley, other than that it fits no problemo...
