1939 Harley Knucklehead Becomes Enduring Love Affair

Like a good (or bad?) human relationship, the owner of this Knucklehead just couldn’t quit her.

To us, motorcycles aren’t just an alternative mode of transportation. They’re a true love affair, commanding our attention, time, and oftentimes patience. But no matter how much aggravation they give us, we just can’t quit them. And like a good real-life partner, sometimes we part with them only to wind right back where it began. Which is exactly the case with this stunning 1939 Harley EL Knucklehead.

We spotted the nicely redone ride on eBay, where its story fascinated us just as much as the actual bike itself. The seller’s father originally purchased the Knucklehead and sidecar back in the ’80s. He proceeded to pour his blood, sweat, and (possibly) tears into getting both in good working order. But by 1986, he was fed up and traded both for a sports car. And yet, he just couldn’t get that Knucklehead out of his, uh, head.

Ten years later, the forlorn lover actually found his beloved ride and brought it back home. But after cruising around on it for a couple of years, the Harley wound up in storage, where it’s remained for the last twenty years. It sure doesn’t look like it, however. Aside from some normal patina like a cracked decal, this Knucklehead looks absolutely amazing. Just as you’d expect a much beloved object to be treated.

Now this bike is on its way to a new home, where we hope it’ll continue to receive the same kind of treatment. A vintage Harley this special certainly deserves nothing less, after all. And with Knucklehead prices currently exploding, we don’t doubt that will be the case. With any luck, the new owner won’t just view it as some kind of appreciating asset, however!
