Fat Bob Offers ‘Best Overall Ride Quality,’ Says Harley Expert
Harley-Davidson Laidlaw’s Matt Laidlaw lays out the best aspects of one of our favorite bikes in new YouTube review.
In his YouTube review of the 2017 Harley-Davidson Dyna Fat Bob, Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson owner and prolific YouTuber Matt Laidlaw laments the fact that this bike is the sleeper of the H-D family. “I’ve ridden all of the Dynas, and I’ve ridden them all quite a bit,” Laidlaw says, “and the Fat Bob is the best overall ride quality, all across the board: handling, comfort. The Fat Bob is the best.”

As the sales manager of Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson located in the greater Los Angeles area, Laidlaw knows his bikes, which is why many people trust his opinion. One of the main reasons why the Fat Bob is the best Dyna he says is because “the symmetry between the front and the rear wheel really helps out with the handling a lot.” Another reason why Fat Bob is the best according to Laidlaw is due to “the sidewall and just the meatiness of how much rubber you have on this bike gives it an extra layer of shock absorption comfort.”
In his 33-minute in-depth review, Laidlaw says, “Everything’s a little bit meatier — a bigger, fatter front tire; you got the dual headlamp that is very unique to this model. Some people hate it, some people love it — I like it for what it is and that is better lighting. It’s kind of what makes the Fat Bob stand apart from the other Dynas in a big way.” Laidlaw cautions that this bike is meant for the taller rider and that people 5’9″ and under won’t be able to enjoy the bike effectively.

“For the freeway, this is the best Dyna,” Laidlaw says. You’ll get to see that freeway cruise as Laidlaw takes the viewer on a 20-minute test ride through scenic Southern California with a viewpoint from Laidlaw’s right shoulder.
On the official company website, Harley-Davidson says the Fat Bob “takes styling cues from the barrel of a Tommy Gun.” Harley’s description goes on to say: “Subtle is not the word that comes to mind when describing the Fat Bob model. It isn’t just built to grab eyes. It’s built to cause a commotion. Tommy Gun exhaust. A unique dual headlight and custom taillight. Fat rubber rolling on machined disc wheels, and performance that lets you get down to business with 103 cubic inches of high-output H-D engine and dual disc brakes. The look is outrageous, but when you sink into the saddle you’re in for one sweetheart of a ride.”
So, take a tip from Laidlaw and give the Fat Bob a try. But only if you’re tall enough to ride this ride.
