‘H-D Forums’ Asks: How Many Miles Out of a Sportster?
When should you budget for an engine rebuild on your Sportster? As it turns out, you’ve got quite a while to fill that piggy bank.
A recent discussion in the forums caught my attention. A new member named roadrash1 made his first post back in 2007, and started a thread in the Sportster subforum.
He wanted to know how many miles you can expect to get out of a Sportster before it will need an engine rebuild. Lately, the thread has been getting a lot of attention.
This thread is of particular interest to me, as I currently own a 2000 883 Sportster that I bought with a whopping 36,000 miles on the odometer. While I’d like to do a 1250cc performance rebuild in the future, part of me wonders how many more miles I can get out of my well-worn 883.
Several members chimed in with promising anecdotes. Terrytori states that an 883 that has always been serviced at his local dealer has upwards of 120,000 miles! That’s incredible, but maybe that’s an outlier.
Another member, xxxflhrci, throws in his two cents. He also believes that a top end can last for over 100,000 miles, and the bottom end can go well beyond that.
Wolhar states that they have 28,000 miles on their 2005 883 with no issues. Tapps has an ’05 1200 Sportster with 44,000 miles. Again, no issues. Tileman2692 has them both beat with 58,000 miles on his ’02 1200 Sportster. Same story, too — zero problems.
One member, son of the hounds, points out that some bikes weep oil from the rocker cover gaskets between 30,000 and 50,000 miles. That happened on mine, but luckily the previous owner replaced my rocker cover gaskets before I bought the bike. I’m happy to report that, to this day, my garage floor remains bone dry. Lucky me!
PovertyRider posted a response that made me laugh. “Which will come first? Death of the Sportster due to high mileage, or figuring out how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Inquiring minds want to know.”
To close this post out, I’d like to wish happy and safe travels to all of my Sportster brothers and sisters out there. Who’s going to be the first to 200,000 miles on their Sporty?
