I just double checked - can retrieve with explorer too.
As far as saving to a thumb drive, it works exactly the same way. Once you have your rides up, go to sync to GPS. You'll get the two choices - choose manual and save as GPX file.
This will then tell you to name your route and then export stops and waypoints.
THese files will probably go to your download folder as hdroute.gpx. Just copy those to your thumb drive.
Once copies, you may want to change the name of that file to reflect the actual name of your route.
