Default SYN3 in Primary - knocking

2016 SGS, just had 1000K service done and followed recommendation to change fluids to SYN3. Several days later noticed a loud clanking sound when in neutral and idling coming from primary. Sounded like something was loose knocking or several bolts churning. Happened when motor was hot. Called dealership to report - told me not to be concerned. Asked them to at least listen. Went there, mechanic tells me it is the self-adjusting mechanism that tightens chain. Told to get on throttle in 2nd or 3rd. I tried that and noise still obvious. Called another mechanic at different dealership and told that he had complaints of this happening when SYN3 used in primary. Suggested that I change back to original oil, which I did and amazingly the noise is gone. SYN3 and really SYN2. I am surprised my dealership was not aware of this...also, thought they should have paid for change. $380.00 for 100K service...The whole check everything so I don't have a problem with warranty. Last service they perform. If you experience knocking in the 103 engine after using SYN3 - change back.

I had the same issue when I switched to Betray in primary. Went back to HD transmission & primary oil and it greatly reduced the knock. Still does it occasionally when the engine is hot, but not near as bad.

Dealership kool-aid can have a bitter aftertaste.

Do you have this thin oil in your transmission too?

If you read the service manual on the new ones, it back to Formula + for transmission and primary. The SYN 3 will not hurt it. It's just a little noisy with it and the second choice in the manual.

I just changed mine at 5000 miles to RedLine primary fluid and RedLine transmission shockproof. Much quieter and smoother shifting. Also don't notice compensator noise anymore unless I'm just getting better at finessing it.

I did the 1000 mile service at the dealer and they put syn3 in all 3 holes. It made the worst noise. I took it back and made them change the primary and tranny to Formula + at their cost. Much better.
