This is why forums like this is so valuable. I have learned quite a bit from others here.

Guys - I really think you should try Honda Route planner.... their routing program is very, very nice.

Having plotted Route 66 along with many other rides, I've conditioned myself to use a lot of waypoints when I want to ensure EXACT roads are chosen. And even then, I suppose its still possible for Boom to direct me differently.

Waypoints ............. lots of them ........... which leads to more ROUTES, too. Despite the documented limit of 99 waypoints per route, I cant seem to load routes with more than 50 waypoints into Boom, so that is my personal limit.

dh meyer - hummm. don't think lots of waypoints leads to more routes. Lot of locations leads to lots of routes. If you change the location to a waypoint, you will not have a route and the ride will continue.

I bet you guys are tied of me saying this - but do try Honda Ride Planner. If you don't like it, tell me and I wull shut up.

Better still, save your Harley RP trip and then upload that to Honda- see if there are any differences.

Hell, the jet that I fly doesn't even have WAAS! 😂

By using a lot of WAYPOINTS, I end up having to create more ROUTES.

For example, when I created a route across Illinois for an 'exact' Route 66 trip, I had like 87 WAYPOINTS ........ which I thought would work in BOOM since it was less than the 99 WAYPOINT limit that BOOM has. But it was apparently too big (ie would not import), so I broke it up into 2 ROUTES, each with 40-some waypoints. (For me, 50 waypoints seems to be the limit.) So as I see it, having more WAYPOINTS results in needing more ROUTES. Others here have reported the same issue.

I will definitely trie the Honda planner. If it somehow populates WAYPOINT names in a GPX file, such that the WAYPOINT name shows up on the GPS display banner AND shows up on the 'skip waypoint' screen (rather than longitude/latitude coordinates), I'm all over it. I think this is a BOOM issue, but perhaps Honda populates a more 'robust' GPX file.

Is it me or did HD take away the import functionality within HD RidePlanner? the only option I have is Export
AS the others have stated I just use tyre and save the file as a GPX file to the thumb drive and import it into BOOM. You can plan in the planner and then export to tyre.

From reading this thread, I can see why people hate the BOOM system so much. It's because they don't know how to use it correctly. I'm not saying it's the best ever, but there's so many replies here saying what the system can't do, when it absolutely can.

Guess a lot of it is chalked up to user error.

Same here sans the 8 track days, you must have a few years on me. I can't even remember the last time I was lost. I review a map either paper or electronically and go. My younger friends that rely on GPS's always seem lost. To me the GPS is an aid not a crutch.

I haven't tried co-pilot because I don't use my phone for navigation and I haven't found any reason to. I also don't pair my phone with the head unit. Tried it for a while and found it annoying.

I ran 4000 miles over 10 days and never missed a turn using BOOM. I also put zero stock in being able to talk to my devices. It's a motorcycle.

That feature was always available under the GPS Synch button. Unfortunately, it does look like it has been removed. Interestingly, the synch button does show under the help menu.

Update: HD confirmed that GPS Synch has been removed. The website is not undergoing maintenance and the feature is not expected to be restored. The Boom system will still import a .gpx file, it just won't import the file into Ride Planner.

All I know is occasionally, when I get out into the far reaches, where cell service is spotty (southern Sierra Nevada's, for example), my phone "loses" me sometimes. A real-live GPS has never "lost" me.
