1000 mile service
#131
HD service checklist + OEM or better parts/fluids + receipt retention + basic tools + HD service manual + your time + documentation of miles/measurements + familiarization with moss-magnuson act = pride and satisfaction of knowing a job well done, hard-earned money saved, extra bonding with your bike.
As with anything I've learned in life, if you can do it yourself, then just do it. I'm not a certified mechanic, so I "gifted" the dealer $125 anyway to look over my bike at the 1st service. I just bought a $25K "want", so I'm not going to quibble too much over a $125 "goodwill gesture" (although I agree that it should be free and the cost of doing business for the dealer) to be treated well if/when I need actual warranty service. As long as I am physically able, I am choosing to do and document every xx-mile service beyond my 1000-mile service. I'm learning LOTS from the fine DYI folks here on HDForum. You can do it, too!
