Default O2 sensor question

So I have a Vance &Hines Power duals header I got from a relative, that needed repair. I have done the repair (some welding, I tried to get him to do, but he bought new instead) but there is no hardware with it. Currently running a cat free OEM header. I have all the chrome shields, and screw clamps, exhaust port gaskets, and pretty sure there is a mounting bracket I might need that mounts under the engine or trans. Might be able to fab that myself.

However, I am unsure what size my O2 sensors are. Its a 2014 Twin cam 103". The bung holes in the V & H measures roughly 10.4mm ID of the threads, so I assume they are for 12mm O2 sensors? Not sure if I also need adapters for the bungs.

Any one that has done this swap think of anything else I might need. V &H wants $150 for their hardware kit and I am not convinced I need half of it. Is the crossover mount behind the trans different as well? I will buy the kit if you guys think I would be better off. But hey, free is always better in my book, I just do not want something hinky to happen.

There are 14 and 18mm, I'd re-do your measurements.

I would bet the new, used, header is 14 mm then. I was measuring the inner diameter of the threads in the bung, not the OD of them, and I bet the OD is 14mm.

So would my bike be the 14?

Wide band sensors are 18mm; so you're good. You could probably get the tranny bracket from Harley, although the new pipes may be a bit larger than stock. Measure the pipe OD, you could probably get a standard hanger of the correct size from McMaster-Carr, or another supplier pretty easily.

Good, thanks. I still have the OEM head pipes on there, is the bracket welded to the head pipe, on the OEM?

Not sure where you got your information... I am unaware of any OEM Harley with 14mm O2 sensors...

In '07, '08, & '09... Harley Touring bikes used #27719-07 front and #27683-07 rear 18mm, non-heated, narrowband O2 sensors... the Sporsters still used the narrowband 18mm sensors for many years (maybe still do for all I know), and other models had different transition dates from the 18mm sensors to 12mm sensors...

In 2010 the touring bikes changed to the #27729-10 front and #27809-10 rear 12mm, heated, narrowband O2 sensors... Those sensors use a 12mm x 1.25 thread...

OP, if the exhaust you have was made for a 2010+ Harley Touring bike, it should have the 12mm O2 sensor bungs... but it will probably also have the higher 18mm sensor bungs...

Just plug the 18mm bungs and install your OEM O2 sensors into the lower 12mm bungs....

There is a reason for two sets of bungs......
In 2010 touring bikes, when HD switched to the 12mm sensors, they moved them down near the collector for the front & rear header tubes, just ahead fo the CAT. Thus the need for heated O2 sensors.... Most of the aftermarket touring exhausts, 2010+, will have bungs for both 12mm O2 sensors and the higher mounted (a few inches from the exhaust port) 18mm O2 sensors bungs.

They do this to allow for multiple year fitments with the same pipe for both the OEM 18mm and 12mm sensors, and also to allow for the use of 18mm, wide band O2 sensors, for the various tuning modules that use wide band O2 sensors... They will often include a set of O2 sensor bung plugs for your convenience...

If the pipes only have one set of O2 bungs, up near the exhaust ports, that are 18mm bungs, they were manufactured for touring bikes, before 2010, prior to the change to 12mm sensors...

Well, these holes definitely would not take an 18mm bolt. The inside thread size is like 10.4-10.5mm and there is only one set of holes.

I will dig around tomorrow and see if I have a 12mm bolt of the right pitch, just to be 100% sure, but I cannot see an 18mm going in those holes. No way are the threads 4mm deep.

The top hole LOOKS bigger, but they are the same. No other bungs or holes, and there are no adapters in these.

Hattitude, Thanks for all the information and the correction.
