Default What fuel octane?

Anyone find difference in fuel - 95, 97 or 99 octane in the uk? I think mine ticks over a bit slow when using 95. What do you all find?

I can't find octane anywhere near that rating. We're lucky to get 91 here at higher elevation. I simply purchase the highest octane available when I need fuel.

Best I can get is 93. A couple of times I had to run 89 until I found better fuel, it pinged under a slight load, but I do not recall the cranking over (ticking over) any different.

Anyone know if the EU used the same RON/MOM method for determining octane?

Uk ratings are different - Ron. High octane is Shell V-Power (99) E10 is 95 and E5 is 97 in the UK.

I regularly hear what I believe is pre-ignition at lower revs under load (not lugging imo), using the recommended 95 RON over here (HD Owners Manual recommendation). I also never use any ethanol added fuel. 25k kms on the clock now. I’ve tried using our 98 RON for comparison and rarely hear the pre-ignition pinging under similar conditions. So I’m contemplating just running 98 RON for that reason 🤔🤞. 🍻

Not that I've noticed, I routinely mix n match Texaco E5 (97) and Asda E10 (95) with no difference that I can tell

In North America we measure fuel with AKI (Anti-Knock Index, which is the average of MON & RON. RON is always higher and MON is the Lower.

RON 95 equals AKI 91.

Check out this article for more information on Octane and the various ratings.

I run from 87 which is "regular" to 91 "premium. We don't really have many options for anything above 91 near my place. There's a negligible if any difference between the octane ratings in a stock or even semi built motor. I've easily put in over 100k miles in the last couple years of riding haven't had any issue running the cheap stuff outside of poor fuel mileage from some of the more sketchy stations.

You may be hearing detonation, but you will not hear preignition.

Preignition will destroy an engine quickly.
