Default Front speaker & amp upgrade cost?

OK, so I have been reading the Upgrade & install threads for some time, and my question is about general cost.

I want to keep the 6.5 boom and only get speakers and amps for the front only...... and be as turnkey as possible...

So.... is $850-$900 a reasonable cost for a decent front speaker and amp setup?

I have seen the Rockford Fosgate HD14 set up for this cost and so I assumed that this is the range window.

up your budget to 1k and include a DSP in your list and choose a very good quality amp, there are many discussed here and you should be good. A lot of poeple might advise against the DSP, but i have found it to be well worth the monsy on just about any install for the functions it provides right from the get go and when adding/making changes, or system expansion later. you can make ok stuff sound good and you can make good stuff sound AWSOME! Speakers are very much a taste type choice, the high quality amp and dsp can make up for some "taste" issues when it comes to assembly time. just my 2 cents.

Thanks, I have had a few awesome car stereo systems in my lifetime, I have a very good one in my C6 corvette now.....

So an extra couple hundred is not a big deal, i Love music and Live good quality sound, but motorcycles are out of my zone for now in terms of knowledge.

I will have to disagree with marco on getting a dsp for a front only setup as it will not benefit you enough to cover the cost of the unit. If you were going for 6+ speakers then yes it is almost a must to get the best SQ but not necessary for only the fairing setup. That RF kit has a good amp but the speakers will leave you wanting more. You will need a bt355 line leveler to curve the boom signal as it does that in a basic form like a dsp.

A solid setup includes:
stinger spx 700/4 amp at $250 or so. It is 4 channel if you want to add lowers/rears later. (my guess is you will as we all do/did). A cerwin vega b-52 is a solid 2 channel amp $150 as is a RF t/m 400x2ad but more $$ ($250).

Hertz hcx 165.3 at $150 or so. These have been discontinued but can still be had if you do the research on line. The speaker pods may need a bit of mods to make these fit. Hertz cpx's are the replacement but quit as warm.

Amp wire kit $20.

BT 355 line leveler $80 new but for sale a lot in the audio sale section here.

A good set of rca cables 1.5 ft. $10.

As far as plug and play, with this stuff there is no wire cutting but you will have to take off the tank, speaker pods with ANY setup so plug and play is a farce that the manufacturers use to sell their goods.

Just some food for thought.

If it were me, I’d follow gypsyes advice.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate it, I bought the Sirius XM module and the WHIM module so I will do the stereo at the same time while I am in there.

Is there any way to get decent low range in the fairing, like a 3-way or is this not advisable?

I think there is a limit with 6.5 inch diameter speakers, they just can’t move air adequately to reproduce low frequency sounds. Some riders put 8” or larger diameter speaker(s) in bags or trunk for bass, but that is “lost” at speed on the road anyway.

Thank you, I figured as much 6.5 is as big as I want to go, no customization :-)

I am in the process of doing my dads Road Glide.

Stinger SPX700/4 - $250 online
Biketronics BT355 - $75 with HDFORUMS discount
Infinity Kappa 62.ix for fairing - $112 on sale at Sonic Electronix recently
Misc supplies (wire, fuse holder, etc) - $50
Had some tour pack speakers donated to me by a friend, so that was free, but they were about $50 to start with anyways.

The only thing I'd like to do is have it flashed for a flatter response, but honestly my dad is no audio head by any means. He just wants to hear the music.

I'll throw out the mention of lower speakers if you love music. Even a lot of folks that swore the would never get them give in once they hear them. You are doubling your front sound stage by doing that. If you entertain the idea of lowers then a DSP may be worthwhile for blending the volume between the fairing and lowers and giving you the ability to tune PA speakers easily if you opt for them in the lowers for better mid bass.

I know lowers sound like "customization" but they are drop dead easy to install. Lots of Rushmore guys here could supply you with info and pics if your are interested. Lowers were the first speakers I added outside of the basic four holes and I absolutely would not want to do without them now.
