Well after looking at Garrett's compressor maps on their site and talking to some other knowledgable people. I've narrowed it down to two turbos; a gt2056 and a gt2252. Leaning more towards the gt2252. Has anyone compared the compressor and turbines with any it guess you'd say "knockoff" eBay turbos? Anyone running em with any luck? Hard to beat the price of em but I do believe ya get whatcha pay for. Hate to grenade my engine due to a turbo failure blowing chunks in it. But also hard to turn a eye from a 300 dollar turbo compared to a 800 on a garrett. So anyone real world experience on the eBay stuff? Just curious as more then likely I'll be getting a garrett even if its used and needs a rebuild.

One more question. Do you guys run/prefer internal or external waste gated turbos?

I was going to run an internal one as the plumbing was cleaner. I see a mix of both though, just depends upon your preferences.

This picture shows my waste gate in the lower right. I just love the technical appearance of my entire engine. Any person, male or female, young or old, bike savvy or bike ignorant, can look at this machine and know that something very special is there.

Man jondalar I bet that thing is a beast to ride and fun. Thanks for the feedback in such a ninche part of the forum guys. I have decided I'm going to run a internal wastegate due to packaging constraints and ease altho the external does look kickass on your bike.
I guess I'll let my winter plans out the bag a lil. The plan for my nightster over the winter is obviously turbo as I'm researching that. But also will be hardtailing the bike and plumbing the turbo in with the bike. Between rear of motor and rear tire so its "tucked" into the bike so to say. I've seen a lot of good setups and yours looks good jondalar but the mounting on the side never really did it for me.
Right now I have a thread in the sportster section asking about the rubbermount 1200 head flow/cfms. I've googled to no prevail on a answer. Once I get that I'm going to call Jose at forced inductions (forced inductions speced the turbo on my camaro and have always had my turbo business so I have no doubt hell get me what I need) back home in bama and have him spec a garrett turbo for me off that with a lil wiggle room. I know what range I need to be in (gt20-gt22) but I would prefer one speced to my engine and for my build/custom tailored to me. I've looked at the eBay turbos and sure one of em would more then likely suit my needs but can't bring myself to purchase one without knowing or that they been tried and tested ya know. I always believe ya get whatcha pay for and I just don't think ill be happy or get much use out a 300 dollar knock off turbo. Anyone agree? That way I can order my turbo and use it for mockup until I get funds together for my engine. Since its a mild build nothing crazy not trying to set records the only engine plans is head work to flow better, forged pistons and cams. I'm confident the stock crank and rods will survive. All I've read when it comes to head work in the sporty section is hammer and nrhs. I placed a call to hammer and spoke with dna and we have laid out details of what I want so I suppose im going that route with hammer.
Next issue on the research is a tuner. Frank at dragos recommended a thunder max and dan at hammer recommends a powervision. Any input as the tuner is a very important make it or break thing. Without a proper spot on tune and being able to do it its nothing more then a bomb waiting to grenade which no one wants.
Thanks guys and sorry for the long post ha

I agree with your approach about getting the unit sized right by someone you trust and who actually knows what the hell they are doing (your onto a winner with your man there as they are bloody rare - millions of backyard 'experts' around nowadays where the closest thing they have gotten to a turbo is the Tonka truck they played with 3-4 years back...lol)

The good thing about the internal wastgate is that you actually disable it and go external at a later date if thats what you want - its the best of both worlds really.

I'm a carb setup (good old 40mm CV) with a Zetronix ZT2 wideband O2 logging system setup that helps me tune things.

Both Frank and Dan know their stuff so you cannot go wrong with either. All things being equal, if your buying off one chap then perhaps just stick with them as that way the complete 'package' should be better supported. no point in getting head etc from Dan and a tuner from Drago and then asking Dan to tune the puppy (if you know what I mean)

I would have thought you would be okay with the stock pistons...I run stock with 10lbs of boost and no intercooler (1986 Evo) without pinging or issues. Running the right fuel, jetting and ignition timing are the key to success.

Cheers......

And remember to post truckloads of pics! no Pics = no build! better still do a website...I did!

Well ended up with a garrett gt2554r dual bb turbo. Has about the same map as a gt2252 which I was originally looking at but should spool a lil sooner and better. What you guys think? Now just gotta collect some more parts and hopefully I'll be making a build thread in the coming months for y'all's entertainment filled with lots of other questions and troubles I'm sure to have along the way.

I have a GT2554R that I got off of ebay for $500. It is new out of the box. It was only used for a mock up and never ran. I would think you would want as small of a turbo as possible. The GT2554R is the smallest ball bearing turbo available. I am using my turbo on a Suzuki Swift GT. It is a 1.3 4cyl DOHC engine. Quite a bit different than a Harley V-twin, but the displacement is nearly identical. a Suzuki Swift GT is the same as a GEO Metro, except it is the high performance version with 100hp instead of the normal 55hp.

Good luck with the turbo on your Harley. I always heard that a turbo just simply does not work on a 2 cylinder engine because of the amount of time between exhaust pulses. But guys are doing it and apparently doing it with success!

Ignore Shimaze up there... nothing worse than an uninformed 'expert' when it comes to turbos.
