97 EVO Mikuni HSR 42 Mileage
Its been a while since i posted about this. My 97 Fatboy EVO is getting around 22-23 MPG before the reserve comes on. I have the Joe Minton mileage kit and the Mikuni choke cable and plunger installed. Bike runs great other wise as far as i can tell. no popping n what not. One question i have is i have my air mix screw about 3.25 turns out. I Can screw in to about 1/2 a turn until it starts to stumble. but i can literally back out the screw completely and it makes no difference once i get past a round or so. So im not sure if somethings not set right. Any ideas? No vac leaks. Rebuilt carb. Small gap in acc pump. cant really tell a difference from when that has a gap and when it doesn't. I know basic carb things but ran out of areas to look.

So I’m going to give you the troll response first:
read the mikuni manual:
http://www.mikuni.com/pdf/hsr_tuningmanual_021003.pdf
that being said:
your pilot jet is too big. Try going one full size down and going from there. The mikuni from what I’ve found gets the best mileage between 1 1/2 to 2 turns out on the mixture screw. Once you get past about 2 1/2 turns you need to go to a smaller pilot.

Sorry for delay...i just tried air screw again. Same thing, anything past 2.5 turns out makes no difference. So next thing to try is a smaller pilot jet. Any suggestions? Oh and the need is in middle clip per the Joe Minton setup guide. Also anyone else running this setup?
any different jets yall are using besides the ones it comes with. Im a big guy at 255lbs but still hoping to get mid 30's.

So my setup was :
Joe Minton Setup
Main: 165
Pilot 17.5
Needle on middle clip.
Air Screw 1.25 (Moved it around a lot)
Idle would surge up and down a lot. Sometimes smooth for 20 to 30 seconds then start idling up.
Air screw made no difference past 1.25 out.
So the manual says if you can back the screw out and nothing happens that the pilot is too big. Steve at mikuni said that's hard to believe because 17.5 is already very lean.
So I figured since it was surging that's an indication of vac leak causing a lean condition. Looked for over an hour for leaks. Nothing.
So i had the carb off and double checked EVERYTHING. Choke cable slack, jets, float level, intake manifold, all gaskets and screws. And i figured what the hell, ill put the factory pilot jet back in. I believe its a 25. SO, now i can back out the screw and around 2.5-3 turns i can feel the engine start to stumble. Not much and very hard to tell but i can feel it. Once i get back down to about 3/4 of a turn it will try to stall. so i left the screw set at around 1.25 out, anymore than that and i get surging. so i figured what the heck, ill try it like this.
What yall think? Im willing to buy a new carb but hows this sound?
