Hey everyone, got a question. Why is my 97 sportster 1200C start popping out of my intake once in a while. Most of the time its after about 30 minutes of riding. It only does it when i stop accelerating. I bought this bike used. It does have a after market staight pipe exhaust. And i dont know if the carb has been messed with. Can anyone give me some easy ways to diagnose why this is happening? Thanks all info is greatly appreciated

 

Decel pops in intake usually indicate a rich fuel mixture, have you read your plugs to see what your mixtures are looking like?

 

Low speed cruise or non acceleration spits and pops out of the aircleaner isually indicate a LEAN condition. Check the bike for vacum leaks first, especially if the bike has been running well and this is a new issue.

So as not to be confused with the conflicting info, pop/sneeze/cough thru carb/intake is a sign of a lean condition.
Backfire thru exhaust is rich.

 

My bad I said it backwards, I meant to say lean vs rich.

 

Check float height and clean/replace your air filter.
