Varnished Carburetor Blues
I’m trying to rebuild a stock carb off a 01 Softail that’s been sitting for 10yrs. I have it all apart and except for a bunch of dried sludge and vanish, it’s looks pretty good. I was able to clean most of it, but how do I clean the ports? The manual says not to use any caustic cleaner and suggests Simple Green and hot water, which does absolutely nothing. So how do I get the crap out of the ports? If paper towel lint is an issue, I’m sure a bunch of varnish debris is fatal. I’m ready to move forward with a rebuild kit and new jets, just need some expert advice.

this is the after of a varnished carb, I was totally impressed. You can see the can in the background. Gunk.https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

I have no first-hand knowledge of this technique and am merely sharing what a mechanic told me regarding their newest and greatest carburetor cleaner. Evidently, the new machine super-heated the carb and allegedly burnt off all the crude with no elbow-grease needed. Perhaps such a method could be simulated in an oven with a "self-clean" feature. However, I suppose you would have to overlook the taste of petroleum products with your next meatloaf. Then again, maybe just stick with the suggestions offered by others. Good luck.

glad pinching pennies worked out. A buddy of mine used oven cleaner on his HD motor, what a permanent mess he made, but he saved money and labor.
