Default Sputters and misfires on a whim

[posting here because identical post in the Tech Section has been completely ignored]

Hello all,

this is Maurizio from Rome, Italy; I ride a 1995 Superglide Sport (80cu.in., carburetted) in its stock standard form.
All original, no mods whatsoever.

When I first picked her up, she seemed OK but soon developed a funny tantrum: on a whim she would start sputtering and misfiring and run on one cylinder only.
According to the noise, when this happens she runs on the front cylinder and the rear cylinder misfires.

I took her to an authorised stealership, they explained the bike is 20 years old, they will replace all gaskets and "rubbers" mating carb to intake manifold to heads, and rejet (jetted too lean).

OK...

I picked her up, everything was just fine for a week, then she started sputtering again.
It's not a matter of overheating in city traffic, yesterday it was half drizzling and I was doing an easy 35mph (50kmh) and slowed down to a red light, dropped to 3rd, 2nd gear, when I opened the throttle again she wouldn't go, then started misfiring.

I pulled over and put my ungloved hand at the exhaust pipes:
- the bottom silencer (front cylinder) was running hot and steady,
- the top silencer (rear cylinder) was running cold and sputtering.
I have the OEM 2-2 system with the long compensator pipe in the middle.

OK, I tell myself, I will have to look at the ignition.
I can change the plugs, no problem.
I can remove the nice chromey cover off the coil housing and change the plug leads... I assume OEM leads or SE leads will do the job.
BUT...
...when it comes to changing the coil, I am at odds.

WHICH COIL for a 1995 EVO ?

OEM item, one plug dual fire/cylinder, 2.8 - 3 ohms ?

Dyna S type, one plug single fire, 5 Ohms ? aka 12-138 "Powerband"

Accel coil, one plug dual fire/cylinder, 2.5 Ohms ?

I've also been told to look at the "pickup" (cam position sensor?) in the "nose cone"

If something has gone wrong there, what am I supposed to look for ?

I want to take a look myself because if the stealership refuses to look at electrics...
...it means they can't do electrics...

Advice, please ?
