I suggested the "stage 1" (tuner, de-cat, external breathers) less for "performance" than for undoing all the nasty **** the EPA forces on us.

Less heat, less weight, better response, longer engine life, better sound, less heat, etc.

Call Fuel Moto and see what they suggest for your budget.

Cvaria Johnson is right!

But, if you absolutely can't start with a 124" and build everything else around it, then I would say make it comfortable until you get into modding for performance (although Stage 1 intake and pipes are better than stock for sure).
Make it comfortable and a pleasure to ride, seat, shocks, windscreen, stuff like that, and stuff. Happy Trails on your new ride

For $1000, I would go this route to start. A tuner first and foremost. Then air cleaner and just a nice set of slip on mufflers. That should be just about $1000. You can also decat your head pipes yourself. Enjoy your new ride bud. I love my streetbob

Comfort! I remember when I bought my dyna I did stage one and nothing else, then I bought a street glide and got spoiled with a fairing so I barely rode the dyna. then this past winter I got a little crazy with upgrades to the dyna to make it more for me and now its more comfortable than my bagger granted that it doesn't have suspension mods as my dyna lol

Comfort was the first thing I did to the wide glide. What's the point of the performance upgrades if you can't stand riding it for more than an hour at a time? You said you take multi day trips, I'd imagine a good chunk of those days are spent in the saddle.

I was in the same boat as you, upgraded from a sporty to a 103 dyna with a limited budget on the first round of mods. I have been completely satisfied with increase in power, so far, so I focused on the terrible seat and suspension. It now has progressive suspension in the front and back and an awesome mustang seat. Now 200+ mile rides don't give me numb butt and a sore back anymore.

I know that I'll want more power eventually, but I'm waiting until I feel like the new to me 103 isn't enough anymore before I start down that road.

Just my .02

I want to clarify when I say comfort, I say comfort but that's really only half of it.

With improved suspension and a seat and bars that fit you what you also get is safer handling bike which is a handling-performance improvement; it's not comfort purely for the sake of a cushy ride, which ain't a bad thing don't get me wrong.

The other benefit of a bike that handles better and is more comfortable is a bike you want to ride more, that gives you more pleasure to ride, and makes you safer while improving it's rideability.
