Default 06 Dyna Changing Handlebars

I'm thinking of changing out my bars on my 06 Dyna Super Glide. First, after I get the covers off the handlebar switches how does the switch itself come off? It looks like it's locked on with plastic tabs but I don't wanr to break it.

If I go with the Mini Apes from an 06 Street Bob will I have to change out both the cables and the wiring harneses? Anyone done this and know the rough cost? Thanks!

I put 10 inch mini apes on my 03 FXD. When you take the switch-housing screws out, the two halves of the housing will separate and come off easily. PUT A TOWEL ON THE TANK TO PROTECT PAINT! DON'T ASK HOW i KNOW THIS IS A GOOD IDEA.) I did need to replace the brake line and clutch cable. The ones that come stock on the Wide Glide were the right length I believe, but check with the parts counter guy. The throttle and idle cables did not need to be replaced, but they did need to be re-routed so they no longer pass through the Tripple Trees. I was able to pull enough wire from the neck (behind a rubber plug on right side of neck) so I did not need to lengthen the wires. When re-installing the switch housings, be very careful to not pinch any wires between the housing halves or against the handlebar. If you do, you will be taking it apart again and repairing the pinched wire and then replacing a fuse or two. Again, don't ask how I know.

Yes you do have to change out the clutch, brake, and throttle and idle cables. There is enough extra wire in the frame to pull out for the street bob bars. Idid this same thing on my '07 Superglide. If you do it yourself it will run about $170 for parts. Read the tech tip about taking offthe brake side switch assembly, you have to pull the brake and put a shim in the gap to hold the brake lever off the switch or the nipple on the switch might break. There should be two more bolts to take off to get the switch off, two for the cover and two for the assembly. Takes two different size torx bits. Under the frame there is a plastic cap you might want to remove to pull the wires out. I pulled mine out and had to get in there cause I pulled the plugout for the blinker. Just plugged it back in again and good to go. I did not do the shim trick and had no problems but I may have just been lucky. I have the street bob bars but mudpuddle has the wideglide bars on his. They are 1.25" dia rather than 1". Good luck.
