FXR - which trans do you recommend?

Okay, so the FXR that I'd be getting (which I may not after all) has everything but the transmission.
From, my 2001 Dyna sport, I have an entire drivetrain.
I just figured instead of spending money on a trans that would be "flawed" anyways, or the hassle of trying to fit a splined shaft set-up into my 85 box/bike/whatever,
why not just use the TC drivetrain.
But, of course, it's an attempt to balance money and hassles.
And sorry, I didn't mean to turn this into a TCFXR thread.

Not sure where you are at with this but here are some details for you
Evo FXRs did not come with 4 speeds ever
1989 is the last year of the tapered main shaft tranny
1990 is the first year of the splined main shaft BUT it is the same length main shaft as the tapered shaft, meaning all primary and starter components will work together
1991 and on use a longer splined main shaft so if you use a tranny from this era on you will also need the primary etc
I converted my 89 tapered to a splined shaft using a 1990 only splined mainshaft from Andrews
All that being said a tapered shaft and key are plenty strong for average to moderate builds as long as the key itself and the slot are not damaged. I ran it for years on my built 80" evo and beat the dog **** out of it. But when I went to the 131" I figured it might be a smart move to not test it. Used FXR trannys are out there for pretty cheap if you plan to stick with the Evo, if you are hell bent on the TC swap there are oil pans that you can change to go around the FXR frame crossmember but they are about a grand. Or you can cut and move the crossmember to accommodate the TC oil pan but remember you will need the complete set up, motor, tranny, primary and starter.

Sorry I didn't chime in earlier. A direct replacement 5 speed would be anything FX/FL trans from 1980 to 1986. We do not have a direct bolt in 5 speed for these years. The earliest our 5 speed kit would work is 87. That being said if you updated the primary and clutch actuator cover to an 87 or later than you could use a 5 speed or 6 speed builders kit with a splined shaft as long as you are using a splined clutch hub.
The tough part is finding an 87 and later cases and primaries. Delcron used to make them but they stopped so used is the only way to go right now.

That's funny if I had a nickel for every time I helped someone that didn't buy something you wouldn't see me on the forums because I'd be retired, on a beach, with a cocktail in hand admiring my Panhead.
