Default FXR - which trans do you recommend?

Hey guys. I will soon be leaving the dyna world behind (2001 FXDX) and entering the world of FXRs.
I'm on the verge of buying an 85 FXR that has everything but the transmission.

I plan on making a lighter, performance style bike with mid controls.
I don't care if I have to run belt or chain (stock rear tire width), but I don't want a 4 or 6 speed trans.
I don't have a big budget, so price and reliability will be paramount.

Here's what I have learned thus far:
- in 1985, only the FXRT had a 5 speed, the base model had 4 speed.
- the newer, splined shaft seems to be the preferred model.

So, which one can I use with little to no mods, and which one do you guys recommend?

Please and thanks.
.

No personal experience but I'd suggest asking user "Mark@ Baker Drivetrain" what he thinks. He probably knows more about the various pros and cons than anybody else around here. Maybe, possibly have an inside line on discounts or used box availability...

I'd recommend a new trans from Baker, instead of buying someone else's used trans with a dubious past. But, that's just me.

And no, I don't work for Baker, nor have any dog in this race. But, I DO hear they make quality product.

I would love to be able to afford a quality piece like a baker trans, but that would use up all of my budget.
So what's the least sh1tty 5 speed trans from the MoCo?

Okay, but wouldn't it be a d1ck move to ask him for info and not buy one of his products?

I used to be in sales and engineering similar to him. If somebody called me in meed of a solution I couldn't provide (sell), I'd gladly point in a better direction if I was able. Good customer service and a lack of "hard sell" makes for a lasting impression that can build sales long term. Besides, it's just the right thing.

Also, on the forum he's just another guy. He hangs out in OT a lot and seems to be a cool cat.

Certainly can't hurt. Just be upfront that a full Baker transplant isn't in the budget like you did here amd I bet he'll have some useful info.

They make upgrade amd replacement parts for stock boxes so he gets all kind of exposure to what sells, breaks, & works together.

Intersting project! Keep us posted.
