Default Think this FXDX is a good deal?

Long story short, I'm a new rider. Looking at buying my first bike.(Getting a dyna, please don't lecture me, my life my choice, thanks.) I'm learning more about dynas but not an expert.

I went, looked at and sat on a 1999 FXDX(super glide sport), the bike feels awesome and the weight doesn't scare me at all(and I'm a small guy too!). In fact it felt better than the BS kawasaki they made me use at the harley msf course, I felt safer on the super glide. Weird.

1999 FXDX - Great condition - 21k miles, no rust, everything is stock except for exhaust and foward controls, no other mods.

Owner(2nd owner) said he bought it from a guy that had a DWI and could't ride so he bought it from him years ago, but he can't ride it much now cause of health reasons, he's an elderly guy. The bike sat for 4 months, but fired up after giving it some throttle when starting tonight.(old fuel). He even rode it around infront of me for a good minute. All general maintenance on the bike since he's owned it have been done by him, he's a real gearhead and works on everything from bikes to boats to atv's. Front tire is dry rotted though from sitting for months, and it needs a bulb for blinker, and the speedomoter doesn't work; that's all that's wrong. He wants $4000 for it. Even said if I buy the bike he'd show me how to put on the new tires and teach me a thing or to.

The bike is in great cosmetic condition. Seriously no rust, no leaks, and sounds like a dream. It was a garage queen he said.

I'm taking it to a harley mechanic tomorrow for them to look over it and give me the OK on if it's really a jewel or a jewel that's gonna be a future pain in the @ss.

What do y'all think? Would you buy it?

(I hope this is the right place for this type of question, I'm just wanting some opinions, I'm starting out, slowly learning about the mechanical side from research.)

$4000 sounds like a fair price. The 2000 model got better suspension. But that looks clean for a 99. Theres a speedo pick up at the top back of the transmission. Not unusual to hafta replace them.

Don't know the East Coast market, but if it runs and idles, shifts well, and rides stable $3500 - $4000 is about right.

Ask the HD mechanic about the cam tensioners, the 99-06 used spring tensioners that could fail & cause a lot of engine damage, They're usually good for more 21K but as it's 20 yrs old I'd replace them, there's a higher quality aftermarket pad made by Cyco that should be good for another 30-50K,maybe you can get the owner to help you replace in the deal, while you're in there it's best to replace the inner cam bearings also, all the parts should be less than a $100. Nice looking bike though, my best friend had a black 99 FXDX, nice bikes.

I would buy it if he becomes your mechanic. That in itself will pay back 2 folds in the long run if hes qualified.

Tensioner, Tires, fluids and filters and ride the **** out of it... Decent deal, get a manual for it and a Jack...they are easy to work on.
these hade the lefty timken Crank bearing and forged crank if I remember correctly.

I would let the Harley mechanic check it out, pull the cam cover and if the tensioners look fair, go pay the seller and have the mechanic replace the tensionsers and bearings while it's there. 20 year old tensioners get brittle and I'd replace them.
