Default 2000 dyna. Runs great for 5 mins then dies.

Have a 2000 dyna. I’m slowest going through the entire bike to essentially restore it. I have an issue. I rebuilt the carb and it runs and idles better than it ever has. Take it for a test ride and about 3 miles in, the engine will die without warning. Let it sit for 5 mins and it’s fine. Then dies again. Double checked everything in the carb and it looks correct. Is it related or ignition?

Also so one thing I changed was removed the Evaporative Emission Control System- aka the charcoal canister. One of the lines from this canister was running to the carburetor. I removed it and plugged the hole in the carb. Could this be the issue? Anything else I missed when removing this canister that I was supposed to do!? I’m perplexed.

Ive never worked on a bike with a canister- but next time when its going to stall- crack open the gas cap- you may have a venting issue now that youve blocked off the canister. You may need a new or different gas cap (vented)

Thanks for the reply. I left the vent hose attached to the tank so it should be vented still. While it was dead, I cracked the gas cap and it still wouldn’t start. I’m wondering what the line that was attached to the carb was even for. And if I should have just left it open.

Are you sure that the float is set correctly in the carb? It kinda sounds like you may be running out of fuel in the bowl. Probably not the issue, but you could also try flipping to reserve as it's starting to die... Maybe there's debris in the tank getting clogged up on the petcock screen. The reserve position may still allow enough fuel flow. My 2000 has a vent line coming out of the front of the tank tunnel... Is that line present and clear? Do you have the original vacuum petcock? If so, is it getting vacuum properly?

Float adjustment looks correct. Also, I replaced the petcock and filter assembly while trying to figure this out. Ran a new fuel line also. So pretty much everything from the tank to the carb is new.

The vent in the gas cap can impede the flow of gas if it's plugged. The gas vent hose is to vent liquid gas from the tank when the tank is overfilled. I've seen a semi tractor get affected by this.

^^^ this^^^ there's a one way vapor valve in the small line from the top of the tank. Let's vapor out of the tank, nothing back. You need a vented gas cap. Gas cap vent lets air in the tank as you use gas but nothing out.
Try running with your gas cap loose to verify problem.

Collapsed fuel line or dead spider in there.

I've got a dead spider, exoskeleton bouncing around in my 02's speedometer for the last 15 years, something to look at during the long red lights.

Haha! I had exactly the same thing, until I just had my gauges refreshed with LEDs!
