OK, guys ... I've been hearing all the FXR hype and y'a) have me hankering for an older bike. What do I need to know about what to look for and what to steer away from?

That's a sweet lookin' bike ! As a previous owner of a '90 FXRS-SP (20 years), there are a few things I would focus on besides the cosmetics. Beyond any frame damage, check:

1) front rubber motor mount for deterioration or sagging
2) carb-to-manifold compliance fitting (rubber gasket) for leaks (sucking air)
3) manifold-to-heads gaskets for leaks
4) rocker box gaskets for leaks
5) cylinder base gaskets for leaks
6) charging system

I'm sure others will come along and add other items to the check list, but the above makes a good starting point. Hope you bring it home !
