stripped derby cover bolt
I was changing my oil and stripped a derby cover torx bolt. Anybody have any experience with this? how do i get it out without messing it up. Should ijust take it to the dealer?
you have 3 ways you can do it: (at least that i know of)
be sure to hit it with liquid wrench or something like that and let it sit....
1. take a file and file a line down the middle of it so you can get a large flat head screw driver in there and break it loose.
2. if that does not work takethat screw driver and pop it lightly around that flat spot your cut into it to try and get it loose BE CAREFUL and TAKE YOUR TIME
3. pull out the drill... take off only the head of the screw... pull out the rest of them, take off the cover, and use a set of vice grips to get a grip on it then just grip and rip! if that does not work out shoot for a easy out (smallest one) and see if that works
others may have some killer idea's but those are the ones i went through when i had this happen to me. luckly #2 worked for me. take you time and go slow... it will save you money and from screwing up anything else in the process... good luck!

OOOOH YA! after you hit it with liquid wrench get a small center punch and put that in the middle of the screw and POP it with a hammer... this will help to stretch the threads a bit and make removal easier!

Good advice from JRK. I just went right to the drill and had mine out in 5 mins when I did it. Of course this was the first time I changed the oil and didn't know that was a #27 torx not a #25
Never had a problem since I figured that out.

gonna have to heed your suggestions there JRK. I might add that if you have chrome pc, taping the area of work off just in case would be smart. I know if I scratch that damg pc I'm out +/-$300!

ha ha ha i tape everything!!! even my rachets have duck tape around the heads to keep from scratching.... built a CB750 cafe a while back and had a wrench slip after just finishing the paint... put a 9 in to the metal scratch right across the side... MAD does not even come close to describing that moment... Learned a lesson that day! slow and steady and be prepared for anything...
Well, I changed over to synthetic in all three holes, and while reinstalling my skull primary cover and tightening all the T-27 screws, I stripped the top one, all is tight and not leaking, but I will need to get that out, Anyone use those new extractors from Craftsman, or any other ideas out there
