I'm 6'3" 235, I went with 440's HD in 12 1/2" They are a little stiff, but that's the way I like it, also changed front springs too and put in heavier fork oil. Made a big difference, front doesn't dive any more and way more confidence inspiring to lean it way over, Scap foot pegs all the time. You give up a little in the comfort department, but not much. I hate soft mushy suspension. Peace.
I bought a new set of 412's(12.6")~$180. I had to send them back to Progressive for repairs
as one shock was leaking and the other weeping.2 day delivery was ~$45.
The shocks had about 200 miles on them when I noticed the oil leaks.
The 412's are nice and changing the fork oil is a bonus.
The reason I wentwith the 412's is some of the guys in theHDF Touringsection
were posting their 440's leaking and the cost of the 418 and 440 are about twice of the 412's.
When I noticed the shocks were leaking I posted a note asking if other Dyna owners
were having issues and didn't get any responses. Appears to be isolated 412 & 440 issues.
Went on a 1000 mile ride through the Texas hill country last weekend with the stock
shocks set to maximum preload.I'll be glad when the 412's get back.
Are you sure this is the way to go? I put "Harley Low profile" air shocks on my 07 Street Bob. You can usually find them as 'Baggers" replace their stock shocks. I have used them for 500 miles. They work great. I only paid $85 for my set off e-bay.
I had the same problem that you have with weight . I have traveled with the wife in the past on our wide glide and with the camping gear & mimumal extras we added close to 100 pounds plus being two up. As you know the ride was horrid. I bought a set of 440'sa few years agoto prevent it from bottoming out over bumps. They solved my problem completely and they were worth every dollar I spent on them because they kept my wife from reminding me what a horrible ride it was.
The 440's are great. My wife and I are both "hefty" and used to bottum out the stock shocks all the time. We have not bottomed out once since I installed the 440's.
